Charleston Area Golf Information
Twenty
Courses in History...
AN INTRODUCTION TO CHARLESTON
GOLF
The Charleston area
has long been famous for its many historic "firsts," ranging from the first
museum in America to the first shots of the Civil War. What many people don't
realize is that the game of golf also figures prominently on this list.
Over 200 years ago, Charleston was the site of America's first golf course
and golf club. In 1776, the South Carolina Golf Club and Harleston Green were
established in what is now downtown Charleston. In fact, the term "green
fee" is thought to have evolved from the membership fees paid to maintain the course.
While Harleston Green has since faded from memory, it helped establish a heritage
of golfing excellence that is evident throughout the Lowcountry today.
Many golfers were unaware of the quality golf available in the Charleston
area until 1991, when the Ocean Course at Kiawah Island Golf & Tennis Resort hosted
the most fiercely contested Ryder Cup matches in history. In 1997, the resort again
played host to an international television audience, hosting the 43rd World Cup of Golf.
In recent years Charleston has been featured in many leading golf publications,
including Golf Digest, Golf Magazine, Travel & Leisure, Golf & Travel and Golf
Tips. The Charleston area is also featured in an episode of "Global Golf
Getaways," seen on the Golf Channel.
Charleston golf offers exceptional variety and challenge in one of the
world's most acclaimed vacation destinations. World-class courses situated on
breathtaking coastal terrain range from true links style to tight wooded Lowcountry
layouts.
The challenge of Charleston golf is not restricted to our resort courses!
Throughout the area you'll find the best efforts of the world's top architects,
including Pete Dye, Tom Fazio, Jack Nicklaus, Rees Jones, Authur Hills, and Robert Trent
Jones, Sr. Choosing which course to play first may be your most difficult decision!
The Charleston area's genuine southern hospitality assures you a warm welcome
and a pleasant pace of play as you enjoy each and every round. Experience the
advantages of golf "Charleston Style." |

Old
traditional flavor of low flowing earthworks, classic bunkering, and each hole separated
and framed by vegetation. This ties wide landing areas, strategic and offset angles
of play from various tees and fairway landing areas. The three nines are named Oak
Forest, Burn Kill and Black Robin, all are derived from the history of the site. The
newest generations of super grass called "Tifsport" & "Tifeagle"
used. Every hole has a minimum of five sets of tees and some holes have six or
seven. Total tee area on each hole is 6-9,000 square feet. The Golf Club is a
non-metal spike facility. The Golf Club is owned by the City of North Charleston.

The Harbor
Course, a Tom Fazio design, is a testing par-70 layout sporting water, marsh or both on 17
of its 18 holes. Three holes play directly along the Intracoastal Waterway,
while two more holes hopscotch Morgan Creek to Waterway Island and back. Very
different yet no less challenging than its sister Links course, the Harbor Course features
two marshfront finishing holes as tough as any.
Accurate shotmaking and strategic play is required by this course that
defines target golf. The Harbor Course offers Prolink -- golf's state-of-the-art
satellite-based yardage information system. Golf packages and summer golf options
are available to resort guests. Outside play is accepted. Tee times are
required.

Unabashedly, beautiful, it is a golf course of high standards and impeccable taste.
Designer Rees Jones calls it " one of the elite venues in golf." Ranked as
the #1 non-resort course in the Charleston area by Golf Magazine.
Charleston National is a spectacular 18-hole championship course designed by
Rees Jones. This year-round layout meanders through the marshland and natural
lagoons, which add beauty as well as challenge to the course. Strategically-placed
wooden bridges carry the golfer over the natural areas from the tee to the green. If
you are looking for a visual experience and a challenging but fun course, Charleston
National should be put on your must-play list.
